Bear Creek Trail and Underpasses

Bear Creek Trail and Underpasses
City: Colorado Springs
Year: 1997
Project Description:

Kiowa Engineering prepared designs for two grade-separated underpasses along the Bear Creek Trail near the outfall to Fountain Creek.  The underpasses through the original Interstate 25 box culverts and 8th Street corrugated metal pipes presented extreme design challenges in the tight, congested and flood prone areas.

Retrofitted projects by nature are rarely as good or as economical as those incorporated into original designs, but often are the only option due to land ownership issues and the limitations of existing structures.

Ultimately, a highly useful connection to the Pikes Peak Greenway was effected.  The link not only performs well for the trail user, but in spite of frequent high water events, routine maintenance has been minimal.
